A colour-encoded nanometric ruler for axial super-resolution microscopies

Recent progress has boosted the resolving power of optical microscopies to spatial dimensions well below the diffraction limit. Yet, axial super-resolution and axial single-molecule localisation typically require more complicated implementations than their lateral counterparts. Also, comparison between techniques remains a major challenge due to the absence of suitable calibration tools that would permit a metrology along the microscope's optical axis. Likewise, such test samples would be useful as well for quantifying nanometric drift, or axial fluorophore mobility, or again for quantifying the sub-wavelength light confinement in near-field microscopies. In the present work, we propose a colour-encoded nanoscopic axial ruler. We provide a multi-layered single-excitation, dual-emission test slide, which translates the axial-distance problem into a spectral measurement. Our test slide combines, on a standard microscope coverslip substrate, two flat, thin, uniform and brightly emitting fluorophore layers, separated by a nanometric transparent spacer layer having a refractive index close to a biological cell. The ensemble is sealed in an index-matched protective polymer. As a proof-of-principle, we demonstrate the light confinement resulting from evanescent-wave excitation in total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy. Our test sample permits, even for the non-expert user, a facile axial metrology at the sub-100-nm scale, a critical requirement for axial super-resolution, as well as near-surface imaging, spectroscopy and sensing. Near-field detection of gate-tunable anisotropic plasmon polaritons in black phosphorus at terahertz frequencies

Polaritons in two-dimensional layered crystals offer an effective solution to confine, enhance and manipulate terahertz (THz) frequency electromagnetic waves at the nanoscale. Recently, strong THz field confinement has been achieved in a graphene-insulator-metal structure, exploiting THz plasmon polaritons (PPs) with strongly reduced wavelength (λp ≈ λ0/66) compared to the photon wavelength λ0. However, graphene PPs propagate isotropically, complicating the directional control of the THz field, which, on the contrary, can be achieved exploiting anisotropic layered crystals, such as orthorhombic black-phosphorus. Here, we detect PPs, at THz frequencies, in hBN-encapsulated black phosphorus field effect transistors through THz near-field photocurrent nanoscopy. The real-space mapping of the thermoelectrical near-field photocurrents reveals deeply sub-wavelength THz PPs (λp ≈ λ0/76), with dispersion tunable by electrostatic control of the carrier density. The in-plane anisotropy of the dielectric response results into anisotropic polariton propagation along the armchair and zigzag crystallographic axes of black-phosphorus. The achieved directional subwavelength light confinement makes this material system a versatile platform for sensing and quantum technology based on nonlinear optics.

Independently tunable dual Fano resonances based on plasmonic MIM Sagnac loop coupling Taiji resonator

In this paper, we first propose and demonstrate independently tunable dual Fano resonances based on a plasmonic structure composed of MIM (metal-insulator-metal) Sagnac loop with embedded Taiji resonator. An S-shaped crossover branch inside the Taiji ring resonator can tailor the propagating modes into their counter-propagating directions, finally tuning the number of whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in Taiji resonator. Both Fano resonances originate from the interference between the discrete state generated from WGMs in Taiji resonator and continuous state from modes propagating in the plasmonic Sagnac loop. By stuffing a silver circle area (SCA) inside S-shaped branch, dual Fano resonances can be tuned independently as SCA has different sizes or locates at different places. Fano resonance would be influenced and shifted strongly when SCA locates at the energy intensity valley of WGM, while without any influence as SCA situates at the energy intensity peak of WGM. Thanks to the strong sub-wavelength light confinement of dual Fano resonances based on MIM plasmonic system, an optical refractometric sensor with figure of merit (FOM) of 100/RIU and high sensitivity of 1899 nm/RIU is demonstrated. Furthermore, this hybrid structure is also used for temperature sensing of ethanol with the maximal sensitivity of −0.793 nm/°C. This compact plasmonic Sagnac loop coupling Taiji resonator demonstrates impressive practical prospects for high-sensitivity biochemical sensors, nonlinear optics, and optical modulation.

Experimental realization of deep sub-wavelength confinement of light in a topology-optimized InP nanocavity

We experimentally demonstrate an InP nanocavity with a mode volume of 0.26 (λ/2n)3. This is an order of magnitude smaller than the mode volumes previously demonstrated in photonic crystal point-defect cavities realized in III-V materials and four times smaller than what is often referred to as the diffraction-limited volume, Vλ= (λ/2n)3. The nanocavity is designed using topology optimization, taking into account fabrication limitations, which are pushed compared to the state-of-the-art. This work thus introduces a new class of cavities featuring extreme dielectric confinement (EDC) into the realm of III-V semiconductors, offering order-of-magnitude Purcell-enhancement of the radiative rate. EDC nanocavities may thus be employed to significantly improve the properties of nanolasers, nanoLEDs and single-photon sources, among other applications.

Compensating losses in polariton propagation with synthesized complex frequency excitation.

Surface plasmon polaritons and phonon polaritons offer a means of surpassing the diffraction limit of conventional optics and facilitate efficient energy storage, local field enhancement and highsensitivity sensing, benefiting from their subwavelength confinement of light. Unfortunately, losses severely limit the propagation decay length, thus restricting the practical use of polaritons. While optimizing the fabrication technique can help circumvent the scattering loss of imperfect structures, the intrinsic absorption channel leading to heat production cannot be eliminated. Here, we utilize synthetic optical excitation of complex frequency with virtual gain, synthesized by combining the measurements made at multiple real frequencies, to compensate losses in the propagations of phonon polaritons with dramatically enhanced propagation distance. The concept of synthetic complex frequency excitation represents a viable solution to the loss problem for various applications including photonic circuits, waveguiding and plasmonic/phononic structured illumination microscopy.

Bio-inspired building blocks for all-organic metamaterials from visible to near-infrared

Abstract Light-harvesting complexes in natural photosynthetic systems, such as those in purple bacteria, consist of photo-reactive chromophores embedded in densely packed “antenna” systems organized in well-defined nanostructures. In the case of purple bacteria, the chromophore antennas are composed of natural J-aggregates such as bacteriochlorophylls and carotenoids. Inspired by the molecular composition of such biological systems, we create a library of organic materials composed of densely packed J-aggregates in a polymeric matrix, in which the matrix mimics the optical role of a protein scaffold. This library of organic materials shows polaritonic properties which can be tuned from the visible to the infrared by choice of the model molecule. Inspired by the molecular architecture of the light-harvesting complexes of Rhodospirillum molischianum bacteria, we study the light–matter interactions of J-aggregate-based nanorings with similar dimensions to the analogous natural nanoscale architectures. Electromagnetic simulations show that these nanorings of J-aggregates can act as resonators, with subwavelength confinement of light while concentrating the electric field in specific regions. These results open the door to bio-inspired building blocks for metamaterials from visible to infrared in an all-organic platform, while offering a new perspective on light–matter interactions at the nanoscale in densely packed organic matter in biological organisms including photosynthetic organelles.

Modal properties of dielectric bowtie cavities with deep sub-wavelength confinement.

We present a design for an optical dielectric bowtie cavity which features deep sub-wavelength confinement of light. The cavity is derived via simplification of a complex geometry identified through inverse design by topology optimization, and it successfully retains the extreme properties of the original structure, including an effective mode volume of Veff = 0.083 ± 0.001 (λc/2nSi)3 at its center. Based on this design, we present a modal analysis to show that the Purcell factor can be well described by a single quasinormal mode in a wide bandwidth of interest. Owing to the small mode volume, moreover, the cavity exhibits a remarkable sensitivity to local shape deformations, which we show to be well described by perturbation theory. The intuitive simplification approach to inverse design geometries coupled with the quasinormal mode analysis demonstrated in this work provides a powerful modeling framework for the emerging field of dielectric cavities with deep sub-wavelength confinement.

Metasurfaces for Sensing Applications: Gas, Bio and Chemical

Performance of photonic devices critically depends upon their efficiency on controlling the flow of light therein. In the recent past, the implementation of plasmonics, two-dimensional (2D) materials and metamaterials for enhanced light-matter interaction (through concepts such as sub-wavelength light confinement and dynamic wavefront shape manipulation) led to diverse applications belonging to spectroscopy, imaging and optical sensing etc. While 2D materials such as graphene, MoS2 etc., are still being explored in optical sensing in last few years, the application of plasmonics and metamaterials is limited owing to the involvement of noble metals having a constant electron density. The capability of competently controlling the electron density of noble metals is very limited. Further, due to absorption characteristics of metals, the plasmonic and metamaterial devices suffer from large optical loss. Hence, the photonic devices (sensors, in particular) require that an efficient dynamic control of light at nanoscale through field (electric or optical) variation using substitute low-loss materials. One such option may be plasmonic metasurfaces. Metasurfaces are arrays of optical antenna-like anisotropic structures (sub-wavelength size), which are designated to control the amplitude and phase of reflected, scattered and transmitted components of incident light radiation. The present review put forth recent development on metamaterial and metastructure-based various sensors.

Photonic crystals with split ring unit cells for subwavelength light confinement.

Here we report a photonic crystal with a split ring unit cell shape that demonstrates an order of magnitude larger peak electric field energy density compared with that of a traditional photonic crystal. Split ring photonic crystals possess several subwavelength tuning parameters, including split ring rotation angle and split width, which can be leveraged to modify light confinement for specific applications. Modifying the split ring's parameters allows for tuning of the peak electric field energy density in the split by over one order of magnitude and tuning of the air band edge wavelength by nearly 10 nm in the near infrared region. Designed to have highly focused optical energy in an accessible subwavelength gap, the split ring photonic crystal is well suited for applications including optical biosensing, optical trapping, and enhanced emission from a quantum dot or other nanoscale emitter that could be incorporated in the split.

WS2/hBN Hetero-nanoslits with Spatially Mismatched Electromagnetic Multipoles for Directional and Enhanced Light Emission

van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures based on vertical-stacking transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with tunable excitonic energies and spin-valley properties show intriguing optical and optoelectronic applications. Additionally, vdW heterostructures with high refractive indices, exciton-induced Lorentzian dispersion, and controllable structures are ideal building blocks as optical resonators for subwavelength light confinement and effective light-matter interaction, which have not been studied. Herein, we build vdW hetero-nanoslits based on tungsten disulfide (WS2) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) multilayers. The multipole optical modes arise from the evolution of electromagnetic near-field distributions through engineering of refractive index and corresponding optical path differences (OPDs). More importantly, the coupling between electromagnetic multipoles with spectral and spatial overlap facilitates the directional scattering with an engineered forward-to-backward (F/B) ratio from 0.1 to 100.0 owing to generalized Kerker effects. Through further combination of WS2 monolayers and WS2/hBN hetero-nanoslits, the photoluminescence (PL) modulation in the range of 50% to 800% is achieved. The enhancement factor and modulation range are comparable to the best performances of single-element plasmonic or dielectric nanostructures. This work provides a different insight into designing nanophotonic devices in the visible range by solely relying on vdW heterostructures.

Multiple Fano resonance refractive index sensor based on a plasmonic metal-insulator-metal based Taiji resonator

We propose and numerically analyze a multiple Fano resonance device with high quality ( Q ) factor and high modulation depth based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide laterally coupled Taiji resonator in the near-infrared regime. A silver-air-silver groove (SASG) is embedded in the MIM waveguide. The so-called Taiji resonator is an S-shaped additional crossover branch embedded in a ring cavity to selectively couple counterpropagating cavity modes, therefore increasing the propagating modes relative to the traditional ring cavity. Up to septuple Fano peaks rise from the interference between narrow discrete modes generated from the Taiji resonator and broad continuum modes stemming from the SASG, which can be easily tuned by adjusting the different geometric parameters of the proposed structure. The maximal Q -factor is about 317 with a modulation depth of 24.1 dB in transmission. Thanks to a narrow resonance linewidth with strong subwavelength light confinement of multiple Fano resonances, an optical refractive index sensor with a sensitivity of 2016 nm/RIU and figure of merit of 345 is demonstrated. Furthermore, the sensor can be used for sensing biological parameters such as glucose solution concentration with maximal sensitivity of 0.245 nm · L/g. This simple proposed structure may provide a further step for the development of Fano resonance applications in nanosensing, lasing, and nonlinear optics.

The Design and Research of a New Hybrid Surface Plasmonic Waveguide Nanolaser.

Using the hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) principle as a basis, a new planar symmetric Ag-dielectric-SiO2 hybrid waveguide structure is designed and applied to nanolasers. First, the effects on the electric field distribution and the characteristic parameters of the waveguide structure of changes in the material, the nanometer radius, and the dielectric layer thickness were studied in detail using the finite element method with COMSOL Multiphysics software. The effects of two different dielectric materials on the HPW were studied. It was found that the waveguide performance could be improved effectively and the mode propagation loss was reduced when graphene was used as the dielectric, with the minimum effective propagation loss reaching 0.025. Second, the gain threshold and the quality factor of a nanolaser based on the proposed hybrid waveguide structure were analyzed. The results showed that the nanolaser has a lasing threshold of 1.76 μm−1 and a quality factor of 109 when using the graphene dielectric. A low-loss, low-threshold laser was realized, and the mode field was constrained by deep sub-wavelength light confinement. This structure has broad future application prospects in the integrated optics field and provides ideas for the development of subminiature photonic devices and high-density integrated circuits.

Two-plasmon spontaneous emission from a nonlocal epsilon-near-zero material

Plasmonic cavities can provide deep subwavelength light confinement, opening up new avenues for enhancing the spontaneous emission process towards both classical and quantum optical applications. Conventionally, light cannot be directly emitted from the plasmonic metal itself. Here, we explore the large field confinement and slow-light effect near the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) frequency of the light-emitting material itself, to greatly enhance the “forbidden” two-plasmon spontaneous emission (2PSE) process. Using degenerately-doped InSb as the plasmonic material and emitter simultaneously, we theoretically show that the 2PSE lifetime can be reduced from tens of milliseconds to several nanoseconds, comparable to the one-photon emission rate. Furthermore, we show that the optical nonlocality may largely govern the optical response of the ultrathin ENZ film. Efficient 2PSE from a doped semiconductor film may provide a pathway towards on-chip entangled light sources, with an emission wavelength and bandwidth widely tunable in the mid-infrared.

Deep Subwavelength Light Confinement in Disordered Bismuth Nanorods as a Linearly Thermal‐Tunable Metamaterial

Materials with a tunable optical response that can be controllably tailored using external stimuli excitation have undergone considerable research effort for the development of active optical devices, such as thermo‐optical modulators. Although bismuth (Bi) nanodots, embedded into glass matrices, have been proven to have a thermo‐optical response, the recyclability of the structure in solid–liquid phase transitions is a major challenge. Herein, a facile and lithography‐free fabrication method is proposed to realize densely packed stand‐alone Bi nanorods (NRs), with deep subwavelength gaps and a resonance at the midinfrared range (λ ≅ 4.462 μm). Owing to these ultrasmall gaps that support lossy Mie‐like resonances, strong field confinement is achieved, and the resonance wavelength exhibits great sensitivity to temperature, as the thermal sensitivity reaches as high as 1.0316 nm °C−1. This operation is conducted in the moderate temperature interval of 25–85 °C, which is far from the melting point of Bi. Overall, our simple, robust, and high‐performance device is highly promising for realizing optical switches, thermo‐optic modulators, and infrared camouflage.

Photonic Nanobeam Cavities with Nanopockets for Efficient Integration of Fluorescent Nanoparticles.

Integrating fluorescent nanoparticles with high-Q, small mode volume cavities is indispensable for nanophotonics and quantum technologies. To date, nanoparticles have largely been coupled to evanescent fields of cavity modes, which limits the strength of the interaction. Here, we developed both a cavity design and a fabrication method that enable efficient coupling between a fluorescent nanoparticle and a cavity optical mode. The design consists of a fishbone-shaped, one-dimensional photonic crystal cavity with a nanopocket located at the electric field maximum of the fundamental optical mode. Furthermore, the presence of a nanoparticle inside the pocket reduces the mode volume substantially and induces subwavelength light confinement. Our approach opens exciting pathways to achieve tight light confinement around fluorescent nanoparticles for applications in energy, sensing, lasing, and quantum technologies.

Optical vacuum cleaner by optomechanical manipulation of nanoparticles using nanostructured mesoscale dielectric cuboid

Here, we propose the concept of an “optical vacuum cleaner” for optomechanical manipulation of nanoparticles. We utilize a dielectric cuboid to generate an optical gradient force exerted on the nanoparticles for particle’s hovering and trapping. We show that the permittivity contrast between the particle and the nanohole leads to the deep subwavelength light confinement and enhancement at the opening of the nanohole located at the shadow surface of the particle. The proposed “optical vacuum cleaner” can be utilized in optomechanical manipulations on particles such as noble metal nanoparticles adsorbed on surfaces or controlling the particles taking part in cellular uptake.

Hybrid cavity-antenna systems for quantum optics outside the cryostat?

Abstract Hybrid cavity-antenna systems have been proposed to combine the sub-wavelength light confinement of plasmonic antennas with microcavity quality factors Q. Here, we examine what confinement and Q can be reached in these hybrid systems, and we address their merits for various applications in classical and quantum optics. Specifically, we investigate their applicability for quantum-optical applications at noncryogenic temperatures. To this end we first derive design rules for hybrid resonances from a simple analytical model. These rules are benchmarked against full-wave simulations of hybrids composed of state-of-the-art nanobeam cavities and plasmonic-dimer gap antennas. We find that hybrids can outperform the plasmonic and cavity constituents in terms of Purcell factor, and additionally offer freedom to reach any Q at a similar Purcell factor. We discuss how these metrics are highly advantageous for a high Purcell factor, yet weak-coupling applications, such as bright sources of indistinguishable single photons. The challenges for room-temperature strong coupling, however, are far more daunting: the extremely high dephasing of emitters implies that little benefit can be achieved from trading confinement against a higher Q, as done in hybrids. An attractive alternative could be strong coupling at liquid nitrogen temperature, where emitter dephasing is lower and this trade-off can alleviate the stringent fabrication demands required for antenna strong coupling. For few-emitter strong-coupling, high-speed and low-power coherent or incoherent light sources, particle sensing and vibrational spectroscopy, hybrids provide the unique benefit of very high local optical density of states, tight plasmonic confinement, yet microcavity Q.

Angle-multiplexed all-dielectric metasurfaces for broadband molecular fingerprint retrieval

Infrared spectroscopy resolves the structure of molecules by detecting their characteristic vibrational fingerprints. Subwavelength light confinement and nanophotonic enhancement have extended the scope of this technique for monolayer studies. However, current approaches still require complex spectroscopic equipment or tunable light sources. Here, we introduce a novel metasurface-based method for detecting molecular absorption fingerprints over a broad spectrum, which combines the device-level simplicity of state-of-the-art angle-scanning refractometric sensors with the chemical specificity of infrared spectroscopy. Specifically, we develop germanium-based high-Q metasurfaces capable of delivering a multitude of spectrally selective and surface-sensitive resonances between 1100 and 1800 cm-1. We use this approach to detect distinct absorption signatures of different interacting analytes including proteins, aptamers, and polylysine. In combination with broadband incoherent illumination and detection, our method correlates the total reflectance signal at each incidence angle with the strength of the molecular absorption, enabling spectrometer-less operation in a compact angle-scanning configuration ideally suited for field-deployable applications.

Transient exciton-polariton dynamics in WSe2 by ultrafast near-field imaging.

Van der Waals (vdW) materials offer an exciting platform for strong light-matter interaction enabled by their polaritonic modes and the associated deep subwavelength light confinement. Semiconductor vdW materials such as WSe2 are of particular interest for photonic and quantum integrated technologies because they sustain visible-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) exciton-polariton (EP) modes at room temperature. Here, we develop a unique spatiotemporal imaging technique at the femtosecond-nanometric scale and observe the EP dynamics in WSe2 waveguides. Our method, based on a novel ultrafast broadband intrapulse pump-probe near-field imaging, allows direct visualization of EP formation and propagation in WSe2 showing, at room temperature, ultraslow EP with a group velocity of v g ~ 0.017c. Our imaging method paves the way for in situ ultrafast coherent control and extreme spatiotemporal imaging of condensed matter.

Polaritonic Hybrid-Epsilon-near-Zero Modes: Beating the Plasmonic Confinement vs Propagation-Length Trade-Off with Doped Cadmium Oxide Bilayers.

Polaritonic materials that support epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modes offer the opportunity to design light-matter interactions at the nanoscale through extreme subwavelength light confinement, producing phenomena like resonant perfect absorption. However, the utility of ENZ modes in nanophotonic applications has been limited by a flat spectral dispersion, which leads to small group velocities and extremely short propagation lengths. Here, we overcome this constraint by hybridizing ENZ and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes in doped cadmium oxide epitaxial bilayers. This results in strongly coupled hybrid modes that are characterized by an anticrossing in the polariton dispersion and a large spectral splitting on the order of 1/3 of the mode frequency. These hybrid modes simultaneously achieve modal propagation and ENZ mode-like interior field confinement, adding propagation character to ENZ mode properties. We subsequently tune the resonant frequencies, dispersion, and coupling of these polaritonic-hybrid-epsilon-near-zero (PH-ENZ) modes by tailoring the modal oscillator strength and the ENZ-SPP spectral overlap. PH-ENZ modes ultimately leverage the most desirable characteristics of both ENZ and SPP modes, allowing us to overcome the canonical plasmonic trade-off between confinement and propagation length.
